Container Pringle Bay 2
Location: Pringle Bay, South Africa
Program: House
Area: 175sqm
Date: August 2018
Progress: Completed March 2021
Set on a steep site overlooking Pringle Bay, this container home is not only going to be an aesthetic eye-catcher, but have a backdrop to die for. The floor plan consists of 2 x 12M containers with a central steel structure to create an open plan living space. The North-East container will consist of the second bedroom with a small mezzanine level under the mono-pitch roof structure. A small bathroom is allocated for the kids and guests. Alongside this will be the open plan kitchen, living and dine area with a central fireplace. This then leads into the third bedroom and bathroom for guests. This area will also have it's own private entrance from the garden for privacy. The living areas open out onto two separate decks, one facing North which will be sheltered by the two containers and one facing West which opens to the stunning views of Pringle Bay. The North-West container consists of a small study area which forms part of the entrance foyer. Aswell as the main bedroom and en-suite bathroom which will have stunning views of the bay.
Due to a more westerly orientation, all windows and doors will be shaded by either the roof overhang of the main roof or by timber pergola structures. It was very important for the owners to have adequate outdoor spaces that allow them to enjoy the view but that aren't overly exposed to the elements including the harsh winds that can blow through the coastal towns of the Western Cape.
They have opted to build an attached concrete garage structure which will provide some thermal massing on the South facing facade. Later, the owners will also look at installing solar panels on the North facing roof to create a more off the grid living style. Due to the stilted structure, local forna and flora can grow naturally and undisturbed giving this site a real raw coastal feel.
