Nestled between the rocks, this house will sit elegantly on stilts, hovering just above the sloping contours of this site overlooking Glencairn Bay. The brief was to design the container to sit above the ground and allow for a stilted, sloped driveway so that the house and garage could sit below street level, thus avoiding blocking any views of neighbors behind the site. With this in mind, we incorporated a monolithic support structure of driveway, garage, and containers. This stilted structure also ensures that there is minimal to no impact on the site, allowing indigenous vegetation to grow wildly, and giving this container home the sense of floating above the landscape.
The ground floor will consist of two bedrooms and their own en-suite bathrooms for guests. The rooms lead seamlessly onto a deck which overlooks the bay. Large sliding doors can be opened on a hot summer's day so one can enjoy a cup of morning coffee (or Mimosa) on the deck.
On the first floor, there will be an intimate open-plan kitchen and dining area, divided by a wall from the lounge area. A third bedroom and bathroom will be found to the left of the lounge along with a staircase. Sliding stacking doors will open onto another decked area, perfect for entertaining guests while enjoying the fresh ocean air.
